A man accused of assaulting and injuring U.S. Rand Paul is a neighbor to the ophthalmologist-turned-politician and is a fellow doctor himself. Rand Paul at his home on Friday.

Kentucky State Police have arrested the senator's assailant, identified as Rene Boucher, 59, of Bowling Green for intentionally assaulting Paul at his home, causing minor injury, local law-enforcement officials confirmed to Fox News.

According to an arrest citation, Senator Paul told police that his neighbor came onto his property and tackled him from behind. Stay with 8News online and on air for the latest updates.

The Bowling Green Daily News reports that Boucher is an anesthesiologist and the brains behind Therm-a-Vest, a cloth vest said to relieve back pain by delivering thermal heat directly to affected areas.

The release did not provide details of the assault or the nature of Paul's injury.

On Sunday, he made his first public comments since the incident, tweeting that his wife "Kelley and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday's unfortunate event. Senator Paul is fine".

Boucher is an anesthesiologist and the inventor of the Therm-a-Vest, a cloth vest partially filled with rice and secured with Velcro straps that is created to help with back pain.

Boucher was taken to the Warren County Jail, where records show he was released on Saturday on a $7,500 bond with a court date scheduled for Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing.
