Scientists use cosmic rays to discover secret space inside Great Pyramid

Nagoya's muon emulsions film set up in Khufu Queen s Chamber

The Khufu monument or the Great Pyramid contains three large interior chambers and a series of passageways, the most striking of which is the 47-metre-long, 8-metre-high grand gallery. Experts are still divided over how they were constructed, so even relatively minor discoveries generate great interest.

What lies in the middle of the structure has been subject to debate for years as researchers were unable to get a look inside.

Scientists have reportedly discovered a giant void inside the famous structure which may reveal a hidden chamber. "It is not accessible and we needed this new technique, at the right time, to identify and to discover it", Mehdi Tayoubi, a co-founder of the HIP Institute and a researcher with ScanPyrmids, told reporters.

To this day, the Egyptian pyramids remain a marvel of engineering with archaeologists still racking their brains to figure out how the ancient Egyptians were able to carry out such an endeavur.

The pyramid is also known as Khufu's Pyramid for its builder, a fourth dynasty pharaoh who reigned from 2509 to 2483 BC. Muons (elementary particles similar to electrons) originate from collisions between cosmic rays and atoms in the upper atmosphere.

"Having said that we should be very cautious at this point of going too far beyond the observation of the void, because at this point it needs more research and identification of its orientation and dimensions". They penetrate material more deeply than X-rays, so the technique can be used to image more dense structures than, say, CT scanning.

Detectors were set up inside the Pyramid, including in the so-called Queen's Chamber.

One archaeologist, who recently discovered a long lost waterway to the ancient pyramids, says the void could have been intentionally put there by the ancient Egyptians. Every method showed the same result: a large void in the area above the Grand Gallery.

At present, neither the particle physicists nor the world's Egyptologists have any idea just what objective the Big Void filled, nor what artefacts, if any, maybe sealed inside it.

Keep scrolling to see how the scientists found the void as well as the technology they used. "I think it's now time for Egyptologists and specialists in ancient Egypt architecture to collaborate with us, to provide us with some hypotheses", he said. The study of the pyramids has been going on for an terrible long time.
