Pune pitch curator involved in 'pitch tampering' allegations dismissed

India vs New Zealand Pune ODI caught in pitch controversy after TV channel sting operation

Pandurang Salgaonkar, the curator at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) ground in Pune has been suspended after being accused of agreeing to tamper with the pitch upon request of reporters disguised as bookies during a sting operation.

India Today TV showed Salgaonkar allegedly telling their undercover reporters - who posed as bookies - he could manipulate the pitch and sharing information about the playing surface in violation of ICC's anti-corruption code.

"After reports stating an alleged malpractice from the MCA (Maharashtra State Cricket Association) pitch curator, Mr Pandurang Salgaonkar, the MCA has dismissed Mr Salgaonkar from the position of Curator with immediate effect", the statement read.

However, the match, second of a three-game series, went ahead as scheduled after an ICC observer approved the track following an inspection.

A few hours before the start of the match, there was the talk of fixing about Pune's pitch.

"I have to tell that the MCA, of course, the BCCI too, along with the Committee of the Administrators (CoA) have zero tolerance on such subjects, so MCA will be making a detailed inquiry on what has happened or what has appeared on television". When asked if he could prepare the pitch in regards to two players wanting extra bounce, Salgaonkar replied by saying "it will be done".

Khanna also said that he has already written to Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) chief Abhay Apte on the issue. Pitch condition is good and there is more chance to score more runs as the boundaries are short.

Salgaonkar also said that it is going to be a 337-340 wicket either way.

In the New Zealand tour of India, New Zealand and India face each other in the second ODI today on October 25 at 1:30 PM IST.
