8th child reported killed by recalled Ikea dresser

The three-door Malm dresser fell on him in his Californian bedroom when his parents put him down for a nap in May, The Inquirer reports.

Two-year-old Jozef Dudek from California was killed when a three-drawer Ikea dresser - that was part of a recall previous year - fell over and crushed the boy during naptime.

News of Jozef's tragic death only came to light this week after the Dudek's family attorney spoke out saying they were "absolutely distraught" over what happened. Other IKEA chests and dressers in this recall were sold at various times through June 2016.

He also says consumer products should be stable on their own and not require additional anchoring for them to be considered safe.

Follow Tess on Twitter. The model that reportedly killed Dudek had three drawers. According to the Enquirer, he is the first child to die since IKEA issued a massive recall for chests and dressers, which can tip over and crush children if they aren't anchored to the wall.

"Unfortunately, there are 29 million of these things that were sold, and the recall was ineffective in alerting consumers about the problem about the defective condition of the dresser", Feldman said.

As of now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating the death of Jozef Dudek. The plaintiffs contended that IKEA had consistently refused to meet voluntary national safety standards for the stability of chests and dressers, which other American furniture companies had embraced.

"The true tragedy is there might be more of these in the future", Mann said.

Ikea, pictured March 27, 2013 in southern France, has comes under fire following a tipping dresser that has killed multiple children.

Swedish retailer Ikea told ABC, "Our hearts go out to the affected family, and we offer our honest condolences during this most hard time".

Ikea argued, in an official statement, that they spread news of the recall to the best of their abilities, stating that they used social media, email campaigns, national news stories, and their website to inform their customers. Consumers can return the item to any store for a refund, no receipt required.

Ikea consumers are entitled to a full refund for recalled chests and dressers manufactured between January 2002 and June 2016.

If consumers prefer to get the free anchoring kit, they may install it themselves or have Ikea provide a one-time, free in-home installation service, upon request.

Safety standards for dressers are now optional.
