NOAA Issues a Winter Weather Outlook

NOAA Winter Outlook 2017-2018

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center calls for colder than average temperatures across the Pacific Northwest in 2017-18.

"Typical La Niña patterns during winter include above average precipitation and colder than average temperatures along the Northern Tier of the USA and below normal precipitation and drier conditions across the South". When this weather pattern develops, the effects can be felt around the world.

La Nina is one of the phases of the El Nino Southern Oscillation, and it occurs when ocean temperatures in the southern Pacific Ocean drop slightly below their average.

NOAA released its winter outlook on Thursday.

Much of the USA should expect another warm winter, but not quite as toasty as the last two years, forecasters said.

Warmer-than-average conditions are also more likely across other areas of the East Coast, the southern two-thirds of the United States, Hawaii, and in parts of Alaska, NOAA says.

NOAA does not explicitly forecast snowfall during long range forecasts, instead simply predicting precipitation which may fall as rain, snow, or wintry mix.

More snow than normal is expected for Chicago this winter.

Meanwhile forecasters expect drier conditions across the southern U.S. "And around the holidays we should have some snow for the interior Northeast".

Predicting a weak La Nina to develop this winter, Pastelok predicts an abundance of precipitation to blanket the Northwest and the Rockies.

Mt. Baker Ski Area is gearing up for the season, which usually begins between November 19-22, depending on the amount and quality of snowfall, officials said on their snow report.

But after a big season for snowfall in central and Northern California a year ago, Pastelok predicts both regions to be less wet and snowy in the upcoming months.
