Spurs sign LaMarcus Aldridge to three-year, $72.3 million extension

LaMarcus Aldridge is extending his stay in San Antonio. With $21.4 million remaining on his deal, he was eligible to exercise an opt-out option in his contract for the 2018-19 season and become a free agent if an agreement was not reached by the deadline.

The 6-foot-11 Aldridge played his first nine seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before joining the Spurs prior to the 2015-16 season.

However, in taking over the keys to the Spurs' frontcourt from Duncan last season, Aldridge surprisingly took a slight step back, snapping his streak of five-straight All-Star appearances.

Aldridge averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds, career lows if you exclude his rookie year.

According to the report, only US$7 million is guranteed in the final year of the contract extension.

In what should be considered a pretty big shock, the San Antonio Spurs and former All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge are reportedly engaged in extension negotiations. There was also several reports about LMA being unhappy about his role early in the offseason, but he patched things up with coach Gregg Popovich and the front office before training camp. The 11-year National Basketball Association veteran will opt into his $22.3 million deal for the 2018-19 season, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

First, the Spurs attempted to trade him earlier this summer.

While the situation might not be optimal for either side, Aldridge will now presumably be a Spur for the next few years unless he gets traded somewhere along the line.
