United States bombers fly over Korean Peninsula in show of force

The bombers took off from the US Pacific territory of Guam on Tuesday night, before entering South Korean airspace and conducting firing exercises over the East Sea and Yellow Sea, South Korea's military said.

The exercises came hours after a South Korean lawmaker claimed North Korean hackers had stolen a large cache of military documents from his country, "including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, and wartime contingency plans drawn up by the United States and South Korea", reports the BBC.

Late last month the US flew B-1Bs over global waters close to North Korea's east coast. The aircraft then conducted similar simulated air to ground striking drills off the peninsula's west coast, according to South Korea's Defense Ministry.

Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam will hold strategic talks with visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on October 18 in Seoul, according to Seoul's foreign ministry.

The cybersecurity company FireEye says in a new report to private clients, obtained exclusively by NBC News, that hackers linked to North Korea recently targeted US electric power companies with spearphishing emails.

North Korea has said Trump is "on a suicide mission" against it, with the country's foreign minister calling the US President "mentally deranged" in a speech at the United Nations last month.

While the officials said the exercises are long scheduled and not in response to recent tensions, similar exercises have prompted strong condemnation from North Korea in the past.

"There is an urgent need for the military to change and update parts that were stolen by North Korea", Lee said.

Among the classified plans allegedly stolen from the South were said to be blueprints for targeted attacks by Seoul and Washington to eliminate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if a crisis breaks out or appears imminent. He revealed that around 235 gigabytes of military documents had been stolen from the Defence Integrated Data Centre, and that 80% of them have yet to be identified.

Cheol-hee is a member of the South Korea's ruling party, and sits on the parliament's defence committee.

Information on South Korea's special forces was also reportedly accessed, as well as important details on significant power plants and military facilities in the South.

Commenting on the news is Chris Doman, security researcher at AlienVault, who is investigating hacking groups in North Korea.
