Police probe Canadian vehicle attacks, stabbing as 'acts of terrorism'

Edmonton Police Service homicide detectives are investigating after a man's body was dug up from under a garage near 118 Avenue and 96 Street in north

"As we gather more information in evidence that will obviously be reassessed and if warranted, further charges will be pursued".

Thirty-year-old Abdulahi Hassan Sharif, an Edmonton resident, faces multiple charges including five counts of attempted murder and will appear in court Tuesday morning.

He has also been charged with risky driving, four counts of criminal flight causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon for a unsafe goal.

Sharif, who is 30, is a Somali refugee once investigated for allegedly espousing extremism.

"He deliberately tried to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and alleys" at two different places, Rod Knecht, chief of Edmonton police, told reporters.

Police said the suspect, believed to be 30, crashed the auto through a barricade and hit the officer at about 8:15 p.m. local time, sending him flying 15 feet into the air and onto to a police cruiser. The driver then got out and began stabbing the officer, Const. Mike Chernyk. Chernyk fought back, and the suspect fled on foot.

Chernyk is out of hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The driver sped away after the officers noticed the name on the licence was similar to the name broadcast, sparking a high-speed police chase.

About three hours later, a police officer pulled over an U-Haul truck at a checkstop. They then used a stun gun on the driver and took him into custody.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident a "terrorist attack", and urged Canadians to be vigilant. "In fact, no shots were fired anywhere in this entire incident", said Knecht.

Police said the arrested individual had been known to authorities.

"If there are gaps in the system that allowed this to happen, what are we going to do to fix those?"

Two of the four people injured on Saturday remained in hospital, with one listed in serious condition, RCMP Superintendent Stacey Talbot told a news conference.

He came to Canada in 2012 and was granted refugee status in the same year, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said. "There are no conclusions that can be drawn at this present time", said Goodale. The suspect fled on foot, leaving a flag of the armed Islamic group in his vehicle, police confirmed. "The suspect was actually not deemed at that time to pose a threat to the security of Canada".

A little before midnight, identified at a roadblock, the suspect managed to escape aboard a van that he then screened on pedestrians in two different locations, according to the narrative of the police.
