Oklahoma State Outguns Texas Tech in High-Scoring Game

Texas Tech finds unlikely identity in defense

As will Oklahoma State, which knows this unit is different.

In 2015, Washington scored on 75 and 73-yard pass receptions in the fourth quarter as the Cowboys rebounded from an early 17-point deficit for a 70-53 win at Texas Tech. James Washington had nine catches for 127 yards and a score and now leads the nation with 627 yards receiving.

Oklahoma State held the Red Raiders (3-1, 0-1) to 384 yards, about 200 yards below the third-best average in the county coming in, and stopped Texas Tech after Ammendola missed an 18-yard field goal that would have given the Cowboys the lead with 5:30 remaining.

With the Cowboys ahead 7-0 and threatening to score again, Rudolph sailed a pass too high for his intended receiver and into the arms of Texas Tech's DeMarcus Fields, who was making his first career start at cornerback.

It was a game as entertaining as it was expected to be, with several players - including Oklahoma State running back Justice Hill (164 rushing yards) - looking like the difference makers at various points.

So, yes this game could have gotten out of hand if it wasn't for the play of the Tech defense.

On its next possession, though, Tech's Desmond Nisby bulldozed into the end zone to tie the game with just under 10 minutes to play. OSU made a return to the end zone again as Rudolph threw in another touchdown.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders twice settled for field goals with first downs inside the Oklahoma State 5.

Oklahoma State drove the length of the field but was forced to settle for a field goal attempt after Rudolph was stuffed on third and goal from inside the five-yard line.

On two drives, the Cowboys collected 112 total yards but came away with zero points. Rudolph shook off the early pick-six and passed for 376 yards and three touchdowns. The Red Raiders had already defeated quality opponents like the Arizona State Sun Devils and Houston Cougars. In that drive, Shimonek threw an interception that was caught by redshirt junior Jordan Brailford. Where the Red Raiders excel is in turnover margin, where they rank second nationally.

Early in the second quarter, Tech completed a scoring drive to take the lead, with Nic Shimonek passing in the right front corner of the end zone to Dylan Cantrell for a 3-yard touchdown and the Red Raiders led 14-7 with 14:14 to play in the second quarter. Oklahoma State kicker Matt Ammendola missed his second field goal of the night, and Tech had yet another opportunity to claim the lead late in the game with the score tied up at 34.

"We had a chance to really extend it out", Gundy said, "and we couldn't do it".
