Britain's minister criticises London's transport regulator for blanket ban on Uber

Sadiq Khan defends TFL over Uber decision

01:22

The decision was backed by the British capital's black-cab drivers and Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who said anger from Uber customers and drivers should be directed at the company. "I know that Uber has become a popular service for many Londoners - but it would be wrong for TfL to license Uber if there was any way this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety", Khan said.

The petition arose in the wake of the decision taken by the London transport authority, Tfl, to not renew Uber's licence after September 30th.

Uber's approach to medical certificates and serious criminal offences have also been cited as the reasons behind this ruling.

Ride hailing app Uber indicated it is ready to make changes to the way it operates to avoid a ban in London after the city authorities refused its application for a new license Friday.

Transport for London stunned the powerful U.S. start-up on Friday when it deemed Uber unfit to run a taxi service, in a major blow to the United States firm and 3.5 million users in one of the world's wealthiest cities.

"But the blanket ban will cause massive inconvenience to millions of Londoners, showing that the mayor is closed to business & innovation", Hands tweeted. And for many of them, Uber was a way to earn a living, however modest, and come off benefits'.

More than half a million people signed an online petition in less than 24 hours by Saturday afternoon backing Uber's fight to save its vehicle operations in London, mirroring profound economic and political disagreements in Britain.

"We have always followed TfL rules on reporting serious incidents, with a dedicated team that works closely with the Metropolitan Police".

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence. The Transport for London has canceled its license over customer's safety and security issues.

And Mr Corbyn, who is a keen Arsenal fan but did not take to the pitch, will be hoping it is not a bad omen for the party, which is on a high after a better-than-expected election result.

Since its 2012 launch, Uber changed the London scene and the black cab monopoly game by undercutting prices. He told employees the company needed to act with integrity but that he did not believe Uber had done everything it was accused of in London.

In a separate dispute TfL told Taxify to stop operating in the capital.

A former advisor to the Mayor said that, as more than 90% of the 40,000 drivers are from
ethnic minority backgrounds, TfL has a legal duty to prevent discrimination.

Last year's case was brought by two drivers, James Farrar and Yaseen Aslam, on behalf of a group of 19 Uber workers who argued that they were employed by the San-Francisco-based company.
