Black market for caffeinated soda doomed as BYU lifts caffeine ban

It's official. BYU students will now be able to get their caffeine fix on campus.

Yesterday, Brigham Young University announced that it would finally begin serving caffeinated beverages in the Provo campus' dining hall.

Brigham Young University, the largest Mormon college in the U.S., has chose to begin selling caffeinated sodas.

The university never banned having caffeinated drinks on campus, but held firm to the ban on sales even when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2012 clarified that church health practices do not prevent members from drinking caffeinated soft drinks.

Shelby Slade covers community events, issues and stories for the Daily Herald. However, the post said it does prohibit "hot drinks", specifically coffee and tea.

BYU-Idaho spokesperson Brett Crandall says the Rexburg school isn't planning on changing its policy and selling caffeinated drinks anytime soon.

Jones said he didn't know whether to believe it when he saw the announcement on his phone so he walked to a student center and saw the first bottles being stocked in vending machines and refrigerators.

While caffeine is not explicitly banned by the Mormon church, adherents to the faith are encouraged to avoid it. Employees don shirts that say, "I'm a caffeine dealer".

Bottled-water consumption in the US hit 39.3 gallons per capita a year ago, while carbonated soft drinks fell to 38.5 gallons, marking the first time that soda was knocked off the top spot, according to data from industry tracker Beverage Marketing Corp. And for other caffeinated sodas that aren't part of the Coca-Cola brand.

Jenkins added there's been no financial change to BYU's relationship with Coca-Cola to her knowledge.
