NATO condemns United Nations nuclear weapon ban treaty

The United Nations General Assembly

Foreign Minister Taro Kono told reporters in NY that nuclear weapons states and non-nuclear nations have been divided, and there is even a gap among non-nuclear countries over how realistically they should achieve the goal.

More than 40 countries so far have signed on to the first treaty to ban nuclear weapons.

Its Foreign Affairs secretary, Alan Peter Cayateno, issued the call after recently signing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, a legally binding agreement which was adopted by 121 member-states in July. The treaty prohibits the development, testing, production, manufacturing, or possession of nuclear explosive devices.

The treaty is slated to take effect 90 days after at least 50 nations have ratified it. It contributed to the effort when it presided over the 2010 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"It was an important step towards an worldwide goal of a world free of nuclear weapons, and I hope this will revive the world's efforts to achieve it", UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said during the opening of the treaty signing ceremony.

"Now we must continue along the hard road towards the elimination of nuclear arsenals", Guterres told representatives from the 42 countries that, in signing, pledged never to acquire, develop, test, use or threaten to use such weapons.

The United States, Britain, France and others, including Australia, boycotted the event at the annual United Nations gathering of world leaders on September 20.

Mr. Guterres said that the life will be hard in future if we allowed such threatening weapons in possession of various countries as this will put the future of our children in great danger.

"We commit ourselves to continuing to work for a world free of the threat of nuclear weapons".

"This treaty is a clear indication that the majority of the world no longer accepts nuclear weapons and do not consider them legitimate weapons, creating the foundation of a new norm", the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons said in a statement.

"There is no way to win in a nuclear conflict", Solís said. The Holy See and Thailand not only signed but also ratified it.

But delays in getting eight more countries to ratify the treaty mean that it still has not entered into force. But, after nearly a half-century of waiting for a nuclear weapons-free world to emerge, most non-nuclear nations are fed up with the nuclear monopoly of nine nations.

Given the vote margin, the treaty will nearly certainly attain the 50 signatures needed to come into effect.

Japan's top government officials say the country did not sign because its approach to achieving a nuclear weapons ban is different from the treaty, even though nuclear abolition is their ultimate shared goal.
