Israel PM scheduled to meet Egyptian President in NY

Netanyahu and el Sisi in New York

Monday's meeting, which follows mediation in Cairo between Palestinian arch-rivals Fatah and Hamas, reflects Egypt's will to return to the forefront of the Middle East diplomatic scene.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold his first public meeting with Egyptian President Abd al-Fatah al-Sisi on Monday night in New York City, according to Egyptian media reports.

Mr El Sisi met earlier in the day with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to discuss reconciliation negotiations with Hamas and the prospect of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority resuming its involvement in Gaza in place of the militant group's administration committee.

A statement by Netanyahu's office following the meeting said the two leaders held a "comprehensive discussion about the problems of the region".

Sisi has been involved in secret talks with the Israeli premier in the past.

Danny Danon, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, said it was due to the fact that the visit took place at the hotel where the Egyptians were staying and that the Israelis were guests.

The developments signalled a shift in Egypt's approach to the Islamist Palestinian group following years of tensions with Cairo accusing Hamas of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood group.

The United States will consider resuming some suspended military assistance to Egypt, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday.

Trump's predecessor Barack Obama had temporarily frozen military aid to Egypt following a deadly crackdown on Morsi's supporters. Trump praised the distinguished relations between the two countries.

Netanyahu - speaking at an event earlier this month - noted that the current shift is more profound than the one after the signing of the 1993 Oslo Accords with the Palestinians, and the 1994 Israeli peace treaty with Jordan. All of the previous meetings between the two men have been shielded from the public, but Tuesday's comes amid Netanyahu's troubles back home and his presumptive campaign to demonstrate the reversal of Israel's perceived isolation under his leadership.
