Threat To UK PM May Of Johnson Resignation "Recedes" On Brexit Accord

Theresa May and the cabinet

The intervention prompted calls for Mrs May to sack the Foreign Secretary over the breakdown in Cabinet discipline, as well as reports Mr Johnson might be ready to resign if his vision is not heeded in Mrs May's speech.

It was reported by the Telegraph, that Johnson could even resign before the weekend if May signalled that she will sign the United Kingdom up for paying access to the single market permanently, in an arrangement similar to remaining in the European Economic Area (EEA).

No 10 said Friday's Florence speech was a "significant moment" and that the Prime Minister would welcome input from her most senior ministers before it is delivered.

Johnson faced claims of trying to force the prime minister's hand after publishing a 4,000-word article in the Daily Telegraph newspaper calling for a clean break with the European Union after Brexit.

Mrs May and Mr Johnson met on Tuesday night for the first time since Mr Johnson published an explosive personal Brexit manifesto, when both attended a reception for Commonwealth leaders at the UN.

Their schedules do not coincide until Wednesday when Mr Johnson is due to be in the audience for Mrs May's formal address to the United Nations, and he is not due to join the PM at a reception for Commonwealth leaders on Tuesday evening, the spokesman said.

Ms Patel told Sky News: "I'm for Brexit and that's what the PM is trying to achieve - she's been clear, the Cabinet is clear that we want best deal for Britain".

Mr Johnson spoke to TV cameras in NY after bumping into them at a hotel lift as he returned from a jog. Then, Johnson was forced to say he wouldn't consider standing until 2019 after being spotted having a drink with Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon, a key ally of the Prime Minister.

It comes amid reports of Cabinet infighting over Britain's divorce from the EU.

Mrs May said: "Boris is doing good work as Foreign Secretary".

This option is similar to the arrangements adopted by Switzerland, known by its critics as the "EEA-lite", but would be a way of preserving the benefits of the single market.

Asked whether Johnson had threatened to resign, the spokesman said: "The prime minister has been clear that they're all working together and they're all heading in the same direction".

Ken Clarke told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that in any normal circumstances Johnson, the foreign secretary, would have been removed from his position after challenging the prime minister on Brexit.
