Trump advisers warn North Korea to give up weapons programs

Officials: Trump has military options for North Korea

The US ambassador to the UN warned North Korea will be destroyed if it continues its "reckless behavior" and forces the United States and its allies to defend themselves against any attack.

Moon and Trump agreed on the need to fully implement the sanctions so that North Korea understands that continuing with its weapons testing will only result in its increasing diplomatic isolation and additional economic pressure, which will - in all likelihood - ultimately lead to the regime's "collapse", the South Korean President's Office said.

Haley added she was perfectly happy to hand the matter to Defence Secretary James Mattis.

Asked whether that meant Trump would launch a military strike, McMaster said, "he's been very clear about that, that all options are on the table".

U.S. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump's characterization of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as "Rocket Man" during a speech to the United Nations was "risky". "Too bad!" The "gas lines" were a reference to United Nations sanctions against the North.

Kim has threatened Guam, a USA territory in the Pacific, and has fired missiles over Japan, a US ally. North Korea also recently tested its most powerful nuclear bomb yet.

While there has been a great deal of media attention surrounding the Lancer's technical ability to carry nuclear weapons, the United States military's fastest bombers are inspected annually by Russian experts to ensure all B-1Bs are compliant with the Cold-War era Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which bars them from carry nukes.

Democratic US Senator Dianne Feinstein said on Sunday that Trump should not rule out talks with North Korea before it agrees to end its nuclear program.

Trump has threatened to rain "fire and fury" on North Korea if the North continues with its threats. Haley said that wasn't an empty threat from the president but, when asked, she declined to describe the president's intentions.

And then a discussion session on North Korea will be held jointly by Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, commander of the U.S. Forces Korea; Choi Young-jin, South Korea's former ambassador to the U.S.; and Michael O'Hanlon, a senior research fellow at the Brookings Institution.

She said: "At this stage we can not know Kim's true intentions - what we do know is that despite the condemnation and the global sanctions, he shows absolutely no sign of voluntarily abandoning his nuclear or missile programmes".

Experts believe that previous sanctions have done little to deter Pyongyang in carrying out weapons tests.

Classified memos from both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations laid out how the North's pursuit of the highly potent fuel would enable it to develop missiles that could strike nearly anywhere in the continental United States.

But inside the intelligence agencies and among a few on Capitol Hill who have studied the matter, the fuel is a source of fascination and is seen as a natural target for the US effort to halt Kim's missile program.

China has urged the United States to refrain from making threats to North Korea. They plan to meet this week at the U.N. General Assembly.
