Sunday evening: Maria is now a hurricane

Hurricane Jose

Jose is forecast to move north through Wednesday morning, threatening to bring strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding some parts of the Northeast, meteorologists said.

Most model plots show the system arcing north and away from Florida later this week, but it's still too early to rule out the possibility of impact here, WINK meteorlogist Matt Devitt.

Swells generated by the storm are now affecting much of the USA east coast as well as Bermuda, the Bahamas and the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.

Hurricane warnings were triggered for St Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat, while lesser "watches" were issued for the USA and British Virgin Islands where at least nine people were killed during Irma.

In addition, tropical storm warnings are in effect for St. Lucia, Martinique, Antigue and Barbuda.

Meanwhile, hurricane warnings have been issued for St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe and Dominica.

Hurricane conditions are first expected within portions of the Leeward Islands by Monday night, with tropical storm conditions beginning on Monday.

Risky surf and rip currents are expected along the east coast of the United States as Jose moves closer to land.

The storm's sustained winds remained at 90 miles per hour and the storm was moving northwest at 9 miles per hour.

Lee is spinning about 760 miles west-southwest of Cape Verde off northwest Africa and packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, according to centre.

NHC forecasters say Maria will likely intensify to a major Category 3 storm with sustained winds topping 125 miles per hour on Thursday, bringing risky wind, storm surge and rainfall hazards.

Maria is projected to intensify even more, to a category 2 hurricane just before it makes landfall in the Leeward Island later today.

Tropical storm Lee's winds are now at 35 miles per hour, moving west at 8 miles per hour. The storm has been hanging around the mid-Atlantic, weakened, and then strengthened again.

The storm is heading northward through the Atlantic and may come near northeastern states midweek including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
