Sindhu thwarts Okuhara to clinch Korean Open Super Series

PV Sindhu race into semis; Sameer, Satwik-Chirag lose in Korea Open quarters

With this win, the Olympic silver medallist turns to avenge her finals loss to Okuhara in Worlds Badminton Championship 2017 that happened last month in Glasgow, UK. This is her third Super Series title overall, her second this year after India Open.

Okuhara, who hadn't dropped a single game in the tournament until the first game of the final, marched ahead with an early 7-3 lead in the second game by focusing more at the net.

This was Sindhu's third SS title.

Sindhu dominated the proceedings from the outset of the match and opened up an early lead but Okuhara fought back soon and ultimately took a 20-18 lead.

As it turned out, the match lived up to its billing as both the shuttlers once again went toe to toe in a bid for supremacy.

The Korea Open final was a re-run of that epic battle with the only difference being the name of the champion. Both players made several unforced errors resulting in shorter rallies as compared to the first game as Okuhara took a five-point lead at 11-6 at the changeover. Since then, the Korean player has climbed up to world ranking. When the second set lead for Okuhara read 16-9, Sindhu would wisely catch her breath.

Sheer exhaustion forced the Indian on her back as she gasped desperately in an effort to get some air into her oxygen-starved lungs. Sameer tried his best, but the Korean dished out a gritty performance to beat the Indian 20-22, 21-10, 21-13 in a match that lasted 69 minutes.

When Sindhu was leading 18-16, they played a 56-shot rally with Sindhu eventually winning the point, which was the turning point of the match.
