Kaspersky Labs' Banned by US, Amid Security Concerns

Russia calls US ban on Kaspersky products 'regrettable' (Lead)

Last July, the Trump administration already removed Kaspersky from the list of approved state agencies' software vendors, citing concerns Russian authorities could infiltrate usa government networks using Kaspersky's anti-virus products. According to Kaspersky, the firm has over 400 million users around the globe.

The Reuters news agency cited the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology as saying on Thursday that it had invited Eugene Kaspersky to testify on September 27. alongside an unspecified number of U.S. government and private sector cyber experts.

The US Homeland Security Department's decision to ban the use of Kaspersky Lab software on the pretext of engagement in cyber espionage could actually be the start of a "wholesale attack" on Russian businesses overseas, the head of the State Duma's Committee on Information Policy, IT Technologies and Communications Leonid Levin told Sputnik.

Worries rippled through the consumer market for antivirus software after the US government banned federal agencies from using Kaspersky Lab software on Wednesday.

"Kaspersky Lab has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyberespionage or offensive cyber efforts, and it's disconcerting that a private company can be considered guilty until proven innocent, due to geopolitical issues", Kaspersky said.

"No credible evidence has been presented publicly by anyone or any organisation as the accusations are based on false allegations and inaccurate assumptions, including the claims about Russian regulations and policies impacting the company", he said. "This is especially concerning because the Russian government is actively trying to undermine our democracy". The Defense Department does not use Kaspersky products anyway, as officials explained.

The Committee for Science, Space and Technology of the House of Representatives invited general director and co-founder of Kaspersky Lab Eugene Kaspersky to testify about the security of the technical solutions that his company provides, Reuters reports. Already the large retailer Best Buy has decided not to sell Kaspersky products in its stores.

The company denied the allegations.

But two months ago, the news website Bloomberg reported it had seen emails between chief executive Eugene Kaspersky and senior Kaspersky staff, outlining a secret cyber-security project apparently requested by the Russian intelligence service FSB.

The government has suggested that the goal of this hearing is to conduct "oversight of the cybersecurity posture of the federal government, and examine the extent to which the federal government utilizes your company's [Kaspersky] products".

The Kremlin has criticized the United States government's latest ban, describing it as unfair competition.
