Serpico, others from NYPD, rally in support of Kaepernick

Report: African American history museum to host a Colin Kaepernick exhibit

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture will feature items used by NFL player Colin Kaepernick when he protested the National Anthem at football games in its Black Lives Matter exhibit.

He opted out of his contract in March and became a free agent, but so far, no National Football League teams have signed him for the upcoming season.

"He's trying to hold up this government up to our founding fathers", said the now 81-year-old Serpico.

The gesture was in reference to the fact that Kaepernick took a knee or sat down during the national anthem before playing in NFL games past year.

On Saturday, a group of NYPD officers showed up at an event in support of Kaepernick.

Serpico has become well-known for his activism regarding police brutality, and on Saturday he took a knee and raised a fist with his fellow brothers in blue. Following the initial incident in 2016, Kaepernick told that he was "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color".

Serpico was joined by about 75 members of the NYPD, including Sgt. Edwin Raymond, who said he was there to support Colin Kaepernick as part of a desire for racial healing in the United States, according to ESPN. Themes that do appeal to the museum, however, include hip-hop, the Black Panthers, Black Lives Matter, and now, Colin Kaepernick.

In addition to Saturday's gathering of NY police, the NAACP of Atlanta has called for a boycott of the National Football League if Kaepernick does not find a team to play for this season.

'Until racism in America is no longer taboo, we own up to it, we admit it, we understand it and then we do what we have to do to solve it'.

Kaepernick has not made a statement on his current free agency since he stepped away from the 49ers in March, but the rumors coming out of his camp are that he still wants to play quarterback in the NFL.
