Trump lashes out at Sen. Lindsey Graham for comments on Charlottesville

Rev. Franklin Graham

President Donald Trump has taken a swipe at a fellow Republican, calling Sen.

On Wednesday, Graham criticized Trump, saying his Charlottesville remarks are "dividing Americans, not healing them".

The violent protests in Charlottesville left one counter-protestor dead and several others injured.

Former KKK leader David Duke, meanwhile, thanked Trump for his "honesty and courage".

Graham has been one of the sitting Republican lawmakers most critical of Trump's response, drawing the ire of the president Thursday morning in a series of tweets. Her memorial service was held on Wednesday.

"We can have no tolerance for an ideology of racial hatred. Our core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment frame the way Marines live and act", Commandant of the US Marine Corps Gen. Robert B. Neller said early on Wednesday.

"Events in Charlottesville unacceptable and musn't be tolerated @USNavy for ever stands against intolerance & hatred", he said. Trump said. "Do they have any semblance of guilt?" "[Heather] Heyer. Such a disgusting lie", Trump tweeted. Elizabeth Warren called the President's comments "sick".

"What happened in Charlottesville was a tragedy, and the president has been clear on this tragedy and so have I", Pence told reporters in Chile.

"It is obvious that traitors in arms to the nation are not equivalent to those who created it", said Gregory Downs, a history professor at the University of California, Davis who studies the impact of the Civil War on the United States. "Unfortunately these demons are appealing a little bit everywhere". I, along with many others, do not endorse this moral equivalency.

Heyer was killed when alleged white supremacist drove his vehicle through a crowd of counter-protesters.

Graham praised Trump for his condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, the counter protester who was killed August 12, but was critical of the lingering effects of his message, particularly his choice to put blame on both sides.

"He has to fix this and Republicans have to speak out". Jeff Flake, praising the latter's Republican primary opponent, who has expressed support for the president.

"President Trump needs to listen to the people before he takes this presidency in a place that is not acceptable for our country".

During his press conference, Trump specifically denounced the hate groups at the rally in Charlottesville, denying that he was suggesting moral equivalency.

"Blaming "both sides" for #Charlottesville?! No". You can say what you want. "I'll say it right now". "(.) There are two sides to a story". "But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides". "I never thought I would see the day when the president of the United States would openly defend white supremacy".
