More than 100 children among the dead in Sierra Leone, UN says

Gianni Pittella, the president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, has called for the EU to deliver help to Sierra Leone with the utmost urgency, after floods and landslides in the country's capital Freetown took a huge toll on human lives.

Almost 400 people are confirmed dead after a mudslide in the Regent area and floods elsewhere in Freetown on Monday.

With 600 people still missing in capital Freetown, President Ernest Bai Koroma described the humanitarian challenge ahead as "overwhelming".

Hundreds of Freetown residents queued on Wednesday to identify relatives killed in a mudslide on the edge of the Sierra Leone capital, as aid workers warned of an impending health crisis caused by almost 400 corpses.

Gaston Slanwa, Tearfund's Country Representative for Sierra Leone said: 'I drove around Freetown yesterday.

"We fear there are no more survivors", he said.

Forty people were killed in a landslide on Thursday in a fishing village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, said Pacifique Keta, the vice governor of Ituri province, adding that a search was under way for bodies buried in mud.

Storms swept through the capital of the West African country on Monday, leaving streets under water and causing whole hillsides to collapse in rural areas.

Citizens were told they need to identify their dead family members at the overcrowded central morgue by Wednesday night, and mass burials were set to begin at 3 p.m.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said Tuesday that enough food for 10,000 meals had been delivered. Thousands of people lost their homes. A woman who spoke to ABC News said that she lost at least 28 family members in this mudslide. "Without protecting our environment, we can not hope to reduce the risk of such tragedies from reoccurring".

It appealed to Ghanaians and the worldwide community to provide a helping hand in the form of materials, relief items and other donations to people in Sierra Leone. Deforestation for firewood and charcoal is another leading contributor to flooding and mudslides.

Bodies have continued to be retrieved from the mud and rubble, but efforts to identify them are proving hard in the chaos. The government said a number of illegal buildings had been erected in the area.
