Palaniswami Meets PM Modi Amid Buzz of Reunion With Panneerselvam

TN CM Edappadi Palanisamy sacks TTV Dinakaran from AIADMK

Amid the chaos between the two camps of the AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, as the latter might play a role in merging both the camps.

The death of chief minister J Jayalalithaa in December 2016 left a vacuum in the state's politics.

The faction of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy has also passed a resolution as per which all the appointments made by Dinakaran stand null and void. But it's still not a major twist because both Dinakaran and his discredited aunt VK Sasikala are holding on to the top two posts in the party.

The ruling AIADMK faction's decision came in the wake of talks of an imminent reunion of the two camps led by Palanisami and former CM O Panneerselvam. Of course, those keeping a close tab on the developments also see this as the BJP's desperate attempt to stop its political rivals from taking advantage of the "fluid situation" in the state, and thereby make inroads into Tamil Nadu politics.

With Palaniswami and Paneerselvam arriving in Delhi on Thursday evening to take part in Friday's swearing-in ceremony of new Vice-President elect Venkaiah Naidu, there was speculation as to whether they could have a meeting of sorts to thrash out the sticky points standing in the way of a merger. Parrying questions on whether the BJP was engineering the merger, he said the "give and take" has to happen for survival. On the other hand, EPS knows that if he loses the CM position, Kongu community would be thrown out of the party by Team OPS and Sasikala's family and hence the dilemma. More agitations, just as the one held by the party's yuva morcha recently, to ask for holding local polls and better quality of teachers in government schools are being planned. The meeting also said though Sasikala was made general secretary fol- lowing the death of party supremo Jayalalithaa in December previous year, she could not function in the post in "view of extraordinary circumstances".

If EPS moves an inch, Dinakaran will put down his government because he has 37 MLAs with him. He went into self-imposed exile after being named as a suspect for allegedly trying to bribe Election Commission officials.
