Further Losses Likely for South African Rand After Zuma Survives Vote

SA President Zuma faces no confidence secret ballot

Its leader's popularity among South African voters is at an all-time low because of the perception that he is corrupt and unable to inspire the kind of leadership that would kick-start the country's ailing economy.

Mr Zuma is accused of corruption and mismanagement - charges he denies.

Voting booths are brought into the South African parliament prior to a motion of no confidence vote against South African President Jacob Zuma in a sitting of parliament in Cape Town, South Africa 08 August 2017.

The debate in South Africa's parliament over a no-confidence motion in President Jacob Zuma is also a debate over the future of the ruling African National Congress.

The result suggests that at least 26 of the ruling party's 249 members voted with the opposition, who had taken pains to portray their motion as an attempt to dislodge a weak and unpopular president, not an assault on the ANC.

Nine MPs abstained from the vote.

The parliament's speaker, Baleka Mbete, made the decision to hold the vote in secret on Monday, after opposition parties took the case to the Constitutional Court.

South Africa's president Jacob Zuma has survived a parliamentary no-confidence vote, crushing hopes that he would be removed from office.

The vote has become a test of ANC unity as senior party figures have increasingly become critical of their leader.

The decision to hold the vote came against a background of high levels of unemployment, resentment at South Africa's enduring inequality and economic stagnation.

ANC members rallied in Cape Town to support Zuma, some carrying placards saying: "Zuma must stay".

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa said his party will join the EFF in court to impeach the president.

Zuma, 75, is due to step down as head of the ANC in December, and as president before the 2019 general election - lessening pressure for his party to trigger imminent change. He has endorsed his ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as his successor.

Last week ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu acknowledged recent criticism of the party, including the impact of a cabinet reshuffle in March when respected finance minister Pravin Gordhan was replaced with a Zuma loyalist.

Mthembu said the ANC caucus feels "vindicated that we, indeed, voted in the best interest of the country and the electorate who gave us a mandate to continue improving their lives".
