Chinese troops enter Barahoti in Uttarakhand, threaten shepherds

Indian army soldiers march near an army base on India's Tezpur Tawang highway which runs to the Chinese border in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh

However, after the 1962 war, troops from Indo-Tibetan Border Force patrolled the area with weapons in a non-combative manner, under which the barrel of the gun is positioned downward.

The latest transgression took place on the morning of July 25 when a group of shepherds were asked to vacate the land by People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops, officials told news agencies. The Chinese troops, too, withdrew the same day. Similarly, in 2015, the Chinese troops demolished some temporary huts erected there by the shepherds on the grazing ground.

Lending a deaf ear to all the warnings by the Indian Army and government, around 11 to 12 Chinese soldiers transgressed into Uttarakhand's Barahoti district a week back, July 25. Barahoti is an 80 sq km sloping pasture about 140 km from the Uttarakhand capital Dehradun.

However, official sources said incidents of a similar nature have happened in the past and are normally sorted out locally. The incident comes to light after the deadlock between Chinese and Indian troops at Dokalam near Sikkim.

Incidentally, the two countries exchanged the maps of the middle sector some years ago in an effort to resolve the disputed boundary. "Therefore in the eyes of some Western scholars, India has been well-behaved and will not invade or bully other countries", said the article. ITBP officials said that Indian and Chinese perceptions of the LAC differ, which leads to frequent incursions in the area.

According to ANI, the Chinese soldiers entered 800 meters into the Indian territory in Barahoti of Uttarakhand's Chamoli district around 9 am. Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognises as Doklam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.

In a conversation with The Hindu, Long Xingchun, Director of Centre of India Studies, China West Normal University, advocated that Bhutan could become a key player in ending the face-off in Doklam, as part of a two-step formula of finding a solution.

Two days after Chinese soldiers entered Barahoti, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval travelled to Beijing and met with the Chinese leadership including President Xi Jinping.
