Israel says guard at Amman embassy shot after being attacked

US Ambassador to Israel condemns Halamish attack

On Friday, thousands of Jordanians took to the streets of Amman to denounce the Israeli measures.

The incident led to a brief standoff as Jordanian authorities sought to question the guard, who Israel said had diplomatic immunity.

A Jordanian was killed and an Israeli seriously wounded in a shooting on Sunday at the Jewish state's embassy in Amman, a security source and the police said.

Muslim leaders urged worshippers to continue protesting the Israeli measures even after the metal detectors were removed. He says "a weight has been lifted from my heart" and thanked the Israeli government for bringing him home.

The security guard, named only as Ziv, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upon his return to Jerusalem.

On the government level, Israel and Jordan cooperate closely, if discreetly, on security.

A second Jordanian man at the scene, who was the landlord of the building, was also injured and later died of his wounds.

Ghaleb al-Zuabi, Jordan's interior minister, had said the "dead [man] had attacked the Israeli guard with a screwdriver who shot him in self-defence".

Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of a 16-year-old Jordanian who was killed after an altercation with a guard at the Israeli Embassy in the kingdom.

The Jordanian investigation also said Ziv does receive diplomatic immunity in accordance with the Vienna Convention, but the status was "only procedural immunity that does not exempt him from trials before worldwide courts".

A news website linked to the Jordanian military reported that Jordan is refusing to let the guard leave before he in questioned. It has always been a flashpoint of anti-Israeli protests at times of turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

The guard's version of events differs from other accounts that suggested the stabbing was motivated by a row over the late delivery of furniture.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday, Rosh Chodesh Av, explained "I spoke twice overnight with Israeli Ambassador to Jordan Einat Schlein and with the security guard".

Fatah, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' political party, said it rejects any changes made to the compound including replacing the detectors with surveillance cameras, which were also installed at the shrine along with the detectors after two Israeli policemen were shot dead there this month.
