Twitter adds no users in Q2

Twitter beats Wall Street expectations, but user growth has totally stagnated

For the quarter, the site posted a zero percent change in monthly active users as it remained steady at 328 million users.

If anything, Facebook's continued growth as Twitter's monthly active user (MAU) number stalls just reemphasizes the differences.

Advertising revenue saw similar dips, as Twitter's $489 million for the quarter beat analyst expectations of $458 million, but still represented an 8 percent year-over-year drop. "Monthly active usage (MAU) increased 5% year-over-year and daily active usage (DAU) increased 12% year-over-year, marking the third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth", Dorsey said.

Revenue of US$574mln was down 4.7% from a year earlier, while its net loss widened to US$116.5mln from US$107.2mln the previous year.

Maybe Americans are sick of political Twitter, or maybe they're just exhausted of the constant feed of news. Analysts had been expecting an average about 328.8 million users, according to Reuters.

I am by nature a contrarian, so always tend to root for the underdog, and for a while it looked as if Twitter may be finally getting it right. However, the company doesn't disclose the actual number of daily users. It reported adjusted earnings per share of 8 cents, beating analysts estimates of 5 cents per share.

On the surface, Twitter's Q2 report provides good talking points for both bulls and bears.

That means Twitter's daily active user base is growing; We believe it's up to 157 million users.

Chief Financial Officer Anthony Noto said Twitter doesn't know why US monthly active users slipped.

But there wasn't another "Trump bump" for Twitter, and the company's stock plunged as much as 13 percent, to about $16 a share, after recently hovering close to $26 a share, the same price as its initial public offering in 2013. The company reported stronger-than-expected revenue of $574 million.

Yes, TWTR is now trading down more than $2 per share, which is a drop larger than 11 percent for the modestly priced stock. As far as ad metrics are concerned, there was a 95% year-over-year surge in ad engagements.

One of Twitter's biggest gambles to spur higher user engagement has been its increased investments in live and streaming video content.

Under the prior method, non-GAAP net income for the quarter would have been $87 million and non-GAAP diluted EPS would have been $0.12.
