Moscow, EU warn USA after House votes for new Russian Federation sanctions

German industry says vulnerable to Russia sanctions fall-out

RT: If fresh sanctions are approved, what kind of measures can Brussels apply to retaliate and defend its business deals with Russian Federation?

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects the intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14 in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang July 5, 2017.

Corker says he's dropped his objections. Jimmy Duncan (Tenn.) and Thomas Massie (Ky.) - voted against the bill, which passed 419-3.

Legislation hitting Russia, Iran and North Korea with additional financial sanctions has a hit a snag in the Senate.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Sen.

France has said the sanctions "contradict global law" due to their "extraterritorial reach", according to a statement by the French Foreign Ministry.

Thus, European countries like Germany should not fear further US sanctions on Russian Federation. He says, "It's not going to become a calamity". It is not clear if that will happen before Congress breaks for summer recess at the end of the month.

Yesterday, it was reported that US President Donald Trump supported the bill on introducing new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Brussels is preparing to retaliate against the United States if it goes ahead with new sanctions on Russian Federation "that hit European companies", the Financial Times is reporting.

A document note prepared for an EC meeting on Wednesday seen by the daily, states that the European Union "should stand ready to act within days" if the USA measures were "adopted without European Union concerns being taken into account".

USA politicians are expected to vote on new sanctions on Russian Federation tonight for alleged interference in last year's presidential elections, but it could be Europe that feels the pain.

The compromise between leaders in the Senate, where the bill passed with an overwhelming 98-2 majority, and the House, where the sanctions package stalled, was welded with a carve-out for US oil and gas interests. These measures consist of several options, including requesting assurances from the Trump administration that European companies would not be affected, or more aggressive actions such as preventing "the USA measures from being "recognised or enforceable" in Europe, and preparing 'WTO-compliant retaliatory measures, '" the FT wrote.

Frants Klintsevich, first deputy chairman of the defence committee at the upper chamber of Russian parliament, warned that the new sanctions could hurt Russia's efforts to work with the U.S.in fighting terrorism.

Ahead of the vote in Congress on Tuesday, the European Union lobbied Washington against the bill. The Senate, like the House, is expected to pass the legislation by a veto-proof margin.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said his country would respond to the USA new sanctions, according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB.

The 184-page measure serves as a rebuke of the Kremlin's military aggression in Ukraine and Syria, where Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed President Bashar Assad. It warned that despite modifications to the bill in the House, the bill still "foresees the imposition of sanctions on any company (including European) which contributes to the development, maintenance, modernisation or fix of energy export pipelines by the Russian Federation".
