US Warship Fires Warning Shots at Armed Iranian Boat in Gulf

USS Thunderbolt

The Iranian boat, believed to be operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, came within 150 yards of the USS Thunderbolt as Navy warships were involved in a formation exercise in the northern Persian Gulf.

A patrol vessel of the american navy has fired on Tuesday, warning shots against a ship by iranian corps Guards of the islamic revolution, after the latter has approached at least 140 metres, said an american official of the Defense.

But in a statement issued via the IRGC's news site Sepah, it was the American "battleship" which moved towards one of Iran's patrol boats.

The Navy characterized the Iranian boat's actions as not following internationally recognized "rules of the road ... creating a risk for collision".

I don't know why the Iranians keep provoking us. And in August, the USS Squall fired warning shots into waters ahead of a speeding Iranian boat to warn the small craft that it had come within 200 yards of the US ship. The Iranian vessel halted its approach after the warning shots were fired, coming within 150 yards of the USA ship. The Iranian ships had approached the USA ship at high speeds and didn't respond to requests to stop.

Confrontations between US and Iranian forces have grown particularly tense during the Trump administration.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is a paramilitary force that answers directly to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The United States Navy has reportedly fired warning shots at an Iranian vessel, according to Agence France-Presse. The last one to involve warning shots happened in January near the end of then-President Barack Obama's term, when the USS Mahan fired shots toward Iranian fast attack boats as they neared the destroyer in the Strait of Hormuz.
