New York Times Demands Apology From Fox News

"Tony Thomas, who leads the Special Operations command, telling our own Catherine Herridge last week that the US military was close to tracking down ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi after a 2015 raid that extracted tons of intel, but he ended up getting away", Doocy said before showing a clip of Thomas referencing "some leaks" that prevented the military from tracking down al-Baghdadi at that time.

The Times said that story was described to officials in the Pentagon before it was published and no objections were raised.

Fox's on-air personalities blasted the Times; Pete Hegseth referred repeatedly to the "failing New York Times" as the source of the leak.

"Thomas appeared to be referring to a New York Times report in June 2015 that detailed how American intelligence agencies had 'extracted valuable information.'" Fox News wrote on its website.

Fox News also covered the raid weeks before that Times article was published. Tony Thomas, head of the USA special operations command, by Fox correspondent Catherine Herridge.

A Fox News host over the weekend blamed the Times for publishing information from a military raid in Syria; the publication of that information, a US general claimed recently, thwarted an attempt to find Baghdadi. Tony Thomas, United States Special Operations Command, told Fox News's Catherine Herridge at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado Friday that media had leaked a lead on Baghdadi's location.

"The host railed against The New York Times for covering a raid stating that the USA government "would have had al-Baghdadi based on the intelligence that we had except someone leaked" to The New York Times when Fox News had covered the same raid three weeks earlier in a segment in which their correspondent said, 'The newly recovered intelligence may bring USA closer to Baghdadi's kill or capture'". "No senior American official complained publicly about the story until now, more than two years later". A "Fox & Friends" report on Saturday was headlined "NYT foils US attempt to take out al-Baghdadi".

Rhoades Ha said no one from Fox contacted the Times for comment before Herridge's piece was published. "For all of their concern about accuracy, the New York Times didn't reach out to anyone at Fox News until Sunday afternoon for a story that ran Friday night". Weekday co-host Steve Doocy also read part of the statement on air Monday.

The Times asked for an apology for what it called a "malicious and inaccurate segment". The network suggested the Times should check to see whether Thomas' comments have merit and whether anything revealed in its report hindered USA operations. He didn't pass judgment on Doocy's statement.

This story has been corrected to show the second Times story appeared on June 8, 2015, not June 18, 2015.
