Erdoğan, Macron voice concern over Israeli restrictions on Al-Aqsa mosque

Jerusalem's holiest site closed for prayers after shooting

Israeli security forces stand guard as Palestinian worshippers pray outside Jerusalem's Old City in front of the Al-Aqsa mosque.

The AP, citing Israeli media, reported that the attacker was shot and wounded.

Tensions have been high for days with Palestinians hurling rocks and Israeli police using stun grenades after the detectors were installed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ordered the suspension of all official contact with Israel until it removed the metal detectors.

- Electric security gates-controversial -The red Crescent, first aid and rescue services to palestinians, indicated that 109 Palestinians were injured, of whom 38 hospitalized, in the clashes in East Jerusalem.

The metal detectors are perceived by the Palestinians as an encroachment on Muslim rights and portrayed by Israel as a needed security measure following an attack that killed two Israeli policemen.

Three Israelis were also killed in a knife attack in the occupied West Bank illegal settlement of Neve Tsuf late on Friday.

The mosque is Islam's third holiest site after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

Israel's decision to leave the metal detectors in place came after calls on Thursday for the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to back down and remove the devices so as not to worsen the situation.

The site is open for women of all ages and for men over the age of 50, Xinhua news agency quoted a police spokesperson as saying.

Hundreds held midday prayers near the gates of the Old City in protest.

The UN has called for de-escalation of violence and tensions in Jerusalem.

The faithful complied. Thousands flocked to the Old City each day this week for street prayers, kneeling on mats spread on cobblestone and asphalt.

Police Superintendent and spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said on Twitter, "Names of three Israelis murdered in Friday night attack by Palestinian terrorist, Yosef Solomon age 70, Chaya Solomon age 46, Elad Solomon age 36". Since Israel captured and annexed the Old City, including the compound, in the 1967 Middle East war, it has also become a symbol of Palestinian nationalism.

Israel says the detectors are necessary for security reasons following the killing of two of its police officers at the East Jerusalem compound last week.

The hilltop compound has always been a source of religious friction.
