Dennis Hastert out of federal prison

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert arrives at the federal courthouse Wednesday

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was released from a Minnesota prison after serving 13 months for a hush-money scheme he used to hide his past sexual abuse of minors.

Keen investigative work by the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Attorney's Office eventually discovered Hastert had agreed to pay $3.5 million in hush money to one individual in exchange for the former student's silence.

Despite admitting to sexually abusing boys while working as a teacher and coach at an IL high school, he was never charged for any sexual crimes because the state's prior statute of limitations law barred prosecution.

The former Speaker admitted to the judge at his April 2016 sentencing hearing that he had sexually abused children in 1970s during his time as a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in IL.

Prosecutors provided details of abuse of at least five boys as young as 14 - in cases dating back decades for which the Republican politician can no longer be tried because the statutes of limitations have expired. Records list his release date as August 16.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Hastert is under the supervision of a residential re-entry management field office based in Chicago.

He was handed 15 months in federal prison for breaking banking laws in the cover-up, a sentence he was serving at a medical prison facility in Rochester, Minnesota, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Hastert's attorneys declined comment Tuesday. He says Hastert paid $1.7 million out of $3.5 million in "compensation'".

He is one of the highest-ranking US politicians to ever go to prison, where he was known as Inmate No. 47991-424. "They looked (up) at me and I took advantage of them". At the request of authorities, Hastert secretly recorded two calls to Individual A to catch him making threats, but agents soon realized it was Hastert who was lying.

Court filings detailed the abuse allegations, describing how Hastert would also sit in a recliner in the high school locker room with a direct view of the showers. He served as speaker from 1999 to 2007.
