Venezuela sees both sides contest legitimacy of each other's polls

Donald Trump

On Sunday, opposition supporters voted overwhelmingly - by 98 percent - to reject the proposed new assembly, urge the military to defend the existing constitution, and support elections before Maduro's term ends.

Specifically, the government was holding a simulation of the July 30 vote to elect a National Constituent Assembly (ANC) while the opposition was organizing an unofficial referendum of its own to gauge public support for or rejection of the ANC. So voters seemed set to reject the president's controversial plan.

In late June, a rogue police pilot and budding action-movie star stole a helicopter and dropped grenades on the Supreme Court, calling for a rebellion against Maduro's government.

To voice deep misgivings about the deteriorating state of affairs, Venezuela's opposition leaders staged a symbolic poll in voting booths across the country.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro reiterated his call for political dialogue with the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) on Sunday.

More than seven million voters took part in the unofficial referendum in Venezuela on Sunday, out of a total of 19.5 million eligible voters.

Of course, President Maduro says the vote doesn't matter and that he will continue to hold elections later this month to choose people to rewrite the constitution.

The opposition also said the country's National Assembly, which it controls, would name new members to the government-dominated Supreme Court, setting up a showdown with President Nicolas Maduro, whose party controls almost all other state institutions.

Venezuela "sent a clear message to the national executive and the world", announced Central University of Venezuela president Cecilia Garcia Arocha, noting that 6,492,381 voted in the country and 693,789 overseas. Do they want the armed forces to back congress?

Opposition strategy may include lengthy road blockades and sit-ins, a national strike, or possibly a march on the Miraflores presidential palace, similar to events before a short-lived coup against Maduro's predecessor Hugo Chavez in 2002. The opposition has called for a boycott of that vote.

Some supporters said they were disappointed. The coalition has said it will do that in coming days to keep the vote secret and prevent reprisals by officials.

"It clearly states that Maduro is as deeply unpopular as he has always been thought to be, and it shows, as the polls have suggested, that Venezuelans are overwhelmingly against the idea of establishing a constitutional assembly", Philip reports.

"I have never seen a situation where opening times for a practice run of an election have to be extended", said Hector Rodriguez, head of the Zamora constituent campaign, at a press conference.

According to a report by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Sunday, the simulation was seeing "high participation", with CNE executive Sandra Oblitas saying that the event was taking place normally in Caracas.

The chief prosecutor's office said Xiomara Soledad Scott, a nurse, had been killed and four others wounded in the incident.

"That was the fear they had of a recall referendum and for that reason prevented it", he said about the vote that was requested by the opposition and obstructed by judicial measures previous year.

It is unclear what changes Maduro plans to enact, but opposition members fear any branch of government that doesn't fall in line with Maduro will be left powerless.
