Thomas abandons Tour de France following crash

Geraint Thomas is out of the Tour de France after crashing on Sunday's Stage 9 from Nantua to Chambery, Team Sky has announced.

However, Porte's BMC sporting director Fabio Baldato insisted the team had come prepared, particularly for the Mont du Chat climb and descent.

He was one of many to fall on stage nine, along with Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe), Robert Gesink (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Richie Porte (BMC Racing).

"He had a lot of pain but we need to wait for the doctors", he said.

It meant it was a bitter-sweet day for Froome who, despite increasing his lead and seeing several top rivals lose time, lost his chief Team Sky lieutenant Thomas and good friend Porte. "So, thanks to Richie and I really hope he makes a speedy recovery there".

"I just had a bit of a wobble on a switchback", he said.

"He was at the inside of me a few times on the corners, just desperate to get around me".

Uran, who has never finished higher than 23rd in the Tour, climbed to fourth in the general classification, 51 seconds behind Bardet.

However, organisers said he was conscious and speaking but was being taken to hospital.

But Quintana's ambitious Giro-Tour double bid appears to be extracting a heavy price - he is now two minutes 13 seconds down in eighth while two-time Tour victor Alberto Contador slipped all the way to 12th after shipping four minutes.

Barguil, with Fuglsang the last survivor of the day's break, initially appeared to have been awarded the win until the photo finish made clear that Uran had just pipped him to the line.

Geraint Thomas was sitting in a Sky team auto, his shoulder wrapped in gauze, wondering if his 2017 season is cursed.

Three-times podium finisher Nairo Quintana of Colombia also struggled, losing 1:15 to Froome and his group.
