Donald Trump questions US' 'worst trade deals' ahead of G-20 Summit

Members of the Black Bloc anarchist group have been disrupting major international meetings across Europe for three decadesMore

In its communique, the G-20 pledged renewed efforts to combat excess capacity in the steel industry, one of the officials said.

In 2016, steel producers in the European Union sold over 3.2 million metric tons of their steel to the United States, which is the largest importer of steel in the world.

Ahead of the summit, the White House was close to making a decision, but top Trump administration advisers slowed the process down at the last minute, convincing Trump to meet with other world leaders at the G-20 before deciding how to proceed.

The G7, which includes Canada, Japan, the USA and several European countries, have called for a solution to global overcapacity in steel, and the European Union has previously accused China of steel dumping while levying duties of its own.

European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said at the end of June that Brussels would quickly retaliate against the USA if Europe became collateral damage in Trump's war on cheap steel. Germany also has a large steel industry and officials there have been particularly concerned about what a unilateral move to impose restrictions on steel imports to the United States might mean. He suggested putting on Chinese imports 45% tariff and said he would announce on his first day in the office that China was a currency manipulator, and he said proposing taxing imports from Mexico that he would rip up the trade deals and referred this as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP.

But any USA restriction on steel imports would have a relatively muted effect on China, and would hit other countries much harder.

The final statement also underlined Trump's lone stand on climate change, saying that all G-20 members except for the U.S. They are hoping to galvanize other countries at the G-20 to work together to confront China over its government support for the domestic steel industry, with the idea that joint pressure could be more effective and remove the possibility that the United States has to move alone.

European countries would prefer a multilateral solution on steel, he said.

According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, Canada supplies 20 percent of America's overall steel imports, followed by Brazil, which supplies 13 percent.

Several of those exporters-Canada, Turkey, and Germany-are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and as such the Trump administration may have to show that their strategic partners in the military alliance are somehow threatening USA national security interests.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticized Trump's view of global trade.

Trade analysts expect G-20 leaders to persuade Trump to eschew national security tariffs on steel and aluminum because of the blow-back effect they could have on the stability of the worldwide trading system.
