Man arrested at airport over Manchester attack

Police: Manchester bomber did not act alone

We do however suspect others were either aware of or complicit in the knowledge of this attack.

Russ Jackson, the regional counterterrorism police chief, said: "We do believe that there are other people potentially involved in this".

Salman Abedi, a Briton of Libyan heritage, detonated a homemade knapsack bomb as crowds were leaving Manchester Arena on May 22, killing 22 people and himself.

DCS Jackson also said at the media briefing that the police investigation is likely to run for "many more months to come". "We do however believe further arrests are possible".

"We are examining all sorts of lines of inquiry and it is possible more arrests and searches will take place", he said.

He said officers were "engaged" with the authorities in war-torn Libya where Abedi's brother, Hashem, is now being held. "This is a live criminal investigation where central to it are 22 murdered people with grieving families".

The Manchester bombing police are working with authorities in Libya to speak to Hashem, who is being held by anti-terror police.

However, he did give some detail about what detectives had discovered so far.

It is understood that the arrested suspect is not Hashem Abedi, the younger brother of suicide bomber Salman Abedi, who is being held in Libya.

He would not confirm the exact type of explosive used but said forensic evidence had been found at several locations around Manchester. His father was involved in an Islamist insurgent movement against former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"At it stands 23 people have now been arrested in connection with this investigation, of which two were quickly de-arrested, and 20 were released without charge", according to a police update Friday.
