UK's foreign secretary backs doctors in Baby Charlie case

Battle for baby Charlie Gard’s life goes global as Trump requests to meet Theresa May

President Trump waded into the argument on Monday, tweeting: "If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the United Kingdom and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so".

Successive legal attempts by Charlie's parents failed as judges in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in London ruled in favour of doctors, while the European Court of Human Rights declined to hear the couple's appeal.

Pope Francis has said Charlie's parents should be allowed to "accompany and treat their child until the end", while the Vatican's children's hospital has offered to care for their son. Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is being treated, has refused to allow Charlie to be taken out of the hospital.

There is a widespread and nearly visceral feeling at home and overseas that the law made a gross mistake in the tragic case of Charlie Gard.

"It's an unimaginable position for anybody to be in", May told Parliament when asked about Charlie Gard, widely known as Baby Charlie, who suffers from a rare condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage.

Johnson expressed gratitude for the Italian offer but "explained that legal reasons prevented Britain from accepting it", the Italian Foreign Ministry said.

A sliver of hope for Charlie Gard has become possible after the Vatican's children's hospital offered to take in the terminally ill baby boy.

A White House spokesman later clarified that members of the Trump administration had "talked to the family on phone calls arranged by the British government".

Following the meeting on Wednesday, a Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "Minister (Angelino) Alfano raised the case of Charlie Gard and the Pope's recent offer of treatment in Italy".

But the hospital said it had agreed to new plans with Gard and Yates "for his care, and to give them more time together as a family".

On Tuesday, the parents lost a bid to take Charlie to the US for trial therapy when the European Court of Human Rights sided with earlier rulings that continued treatment would cause "significant harm" and that life support should end.

"But I also know that no doctor ever wants to be placed in the awful position where they have to make such heartbreaking decisions".

Charlie's mother has since told the Daily Mail that the support "has given us hope".
