Trump speaks to China, Japan leaders about North Korea

Trump to Telephone Leaders of Japan and China

The Trump Administration is losing patience with China's failure to stop North Korea's nuclear program, and two signals last week were new US sanctions on Chinese aiding the North and a $1.4 billion arms sale to Taiwan.

During the call, Xi said China-U.S. relations had made "important outcomes" since his meeting with Trump in April in Florida, state broadcaster China Central Television reported. However, after the Xi-Trump summit in April brought an improvement in relations with the fledgling United States administration, the latest events are a reminder that risks remain and that from time to time we can expect to see bilateral tensions rise. He reiterated President Trump's policy that the United States remained steady to pursue a unilateral strategy that included military deployment, should additional pressure from China not produce the desired outcome on North Korea.

China's leader Xi Jinping said ties with the United States have been strained by "some negative factors" in a telephone conversation with President Donald Trump on Sunday. "China said the trade grew even as it stopped buying North Korean coal", it reported. On Wednesday, Trump took to Twitter to chastise China for allowing its trade with the North to grow in recent months even as the USA urged a reduction.

Trump and his top aides have done little to hide their irritation over what they see as the reluctance by China, North Korea's main economic partner, to tighten the screws on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programs. "We can not afford to wait for too long before dialogue" Liu Jieyi told reporters Monday in NY. And in January 2015, the India-US joint statement after President Barack Obama's visit to New Delhi had merely "expressed concern" over DPRK's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. Yet there are significant risks, too, including the possibility of opening a new rift with Beijing that could complicate US diplomatic efforts on other critical issues.

When Chinese Premier #Xi Jinping left his first meeting with President #Donald Trump earlier this year, there seemed to be a spirit of cooperation developing between the two leaders. "Failure in the Clinton administration, failure in the Bush administration, failure in the Obama administration, all based on the same policy, that North Korea should be negotiated out of its nuclear weapons program through diplomacy and sanctions". Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!

In addition, the U.S. Navy on Sunday sent the guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem close to Triton Island in the South China Sea, which is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam. "Why should we continue these deals with countries that do not help us?"

The ministry said Trump told Xi the US government would continue to follow a "one China" policy, under which Washington acknowledges the Chinese position that there is only one China and Taiwan is part of it, and that this position had not changed.

Mr Trump also spoke with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan about North Korea, and they highlighted "their unity with respect to increasing pressure on the regime to change its unsafe path", the administration said.
