Merkel takes aim at United States policy ahead of G20 meeting with Trump

Malcolm Turnbull

Last week, Chancellor Merkel addressed the German Parliament where she said that the issue of climate change will be discussed at the upcoming G-20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, which will nearly surely include conversations regarding Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement.

Xi made the remarks in a signed article titled "To Make the World a Better Place" and published Tuesday on mainstream German media ahead of his trip to the European country, where he will also attend the upcoming summit of the Group of 20 major economies.

It pledges support for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation but says that Europe has to take greater responsibility for its own defense.

President Donald Trump will lead the USA delegation in his first visit to Germany for the meeting.

Merkel re-used a line she said following the G7 summit in May, during which Trump withdrew from the Paris climate change accord despite outspoken reservations from the six other nations.

A huge security operation has been mounted by German authorities to protect the summit from anti-capitalist protesters.

'It's not only going to be about (economic) growth but rather sustainable growth, ' she said.

Anti-G20 protest organisers and the city-state of Hamburg have for weeks sparred in the courts over whether activists could set up tent cities.

Amid European dismay over the new White House administration's "America First" approach to trade, immigration and the environment, Mrs Merkel said in a clear reference to the USA in May that "the times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over".

Without mentioning the protests that have German security officials anxious about possible acts of sabotage this week in the country's second-largest city, Merkel noted that these non-traditional issues were forced onto the G20 agenda.

Besides the issues on the climate change, Gu spoke highly of the proposition of "fair globalization" by G20 Hamburg, saying it's an updated version of the "inclusive globalization" by G20 Hangzhou.

She also said the United States exit from the 2015 Paris climate pact had made Europe "more determined than ever" to make the accord a success.

Trump later announced he was pulling the United States out of a landmark agreement to combat climate change reached in 2015 in Paris.

Mounted police units, thousands of police cars, and some helicopters will be deployed to secure the two-day event.
