Plane crashes onto 405 Freeway outside John Wayne Airport; southbound lanes closed

Small plane crashes on I-405 at John Wayne Airport

The pilot of a small plane declared a mayday and told an air traffic controller one engine had failed before the aircraft crashed on a Southern California freeway and burst into flames.

Larry Kurtz said the plane had crashed and two people are being hospitalized with traumatic injuries. "Someone needed water. They were doing everything that they could to help the people that were hurt", Corsaro said.

Nobody on the ground was injured. Two people were on board, the FAA spokesman confirmed.

Flame and smoke erupt from a twin-engine prop jet after it crashed on Interstate 405, just short of the runway at John Wayne Orange County Airport, in Costa Mesa, Calif., Friday, June 30, 2017. The crash happened near the approach to John Wayne Airport, described as a busy commuter airport.

Photos posted on social media showed flames shooting out of the front of the aircraft and smoke surrounding the plane.

Two people were on the plane when it went down and are being treated for their injuries.

The car's driver, who only suffered a bruised elbow, described the frightening incident. The witness said she saw a woman dragging a man from the wreckage.

The freeway was closed in both directions, creating a massive backup, but the northern lanes have been partially cleared, according to broadcast reports.

The airport will remain closed to arrivals until further notice.
