Girl's actions caused her to fall from NY park ride

A 14-year-old DE girl received only minor injuries when she fell 25 feet from a gondola ride at Six Flags in Queensbury New York on Saturday night.

Her brother held her as she dangled briefly from the gondola, all the while screaming for help.

Authorities said a 47-year-old man was hospitalized after he hurt his back trying to catch the girl, but has since been released.

Independent safety experts said there was "no way" she would have fallen unless she was "misbehaving" in some way by not sitting entirely still, as the ride instructs.

Spiegel said the gondola isn't something a person could simply slip out of, but if a rider chose to circumvent safety regulations, it was possible.

Howard said he visited the young girl in the hospital on Sunday.

The ride was checked after the incident and found to be in good working order with no malfunctions or safety issues, CNN reported.

The girl who fell was a 14-year-old park guest visiting from Greenwood, Del., according to a statement from the Warren County Sheriff's Office. "I said: 'It's OK!"

The Glens Falls-based Post-Star reports that the ride was functioning properly when the 14-year-old girl managed to slip beneath the restraining bar of the "Sky Ride". She was treated by park emergency medical staff first, then taken to a local hospital and finally flown by helicopter to Albany Medical Center. "We were in the right place at the right time", Winchell said. The ride was stopped after the operator heard that there was a rider in distress, according to officials.

State inspectors cleared the Sky Ride for resuming operation, but officials at the park 55 miles (88 kilometers) north of Albany said the gondolas would remain idle for at least a second day Monday, pending an internal review.
