Homes Evacuated From London Tower Blocks After Grenfell Tower Fire Outbreak

A resident is helped by a council official as she leaves Burnham Tower residential block on the Chalcots Estate in north London

On Friday, police said that manslaughter charges could be brought over the Grenfell inferno, after finding that the fire started with a faulty fridge and the building's cladding had failed safety tests.

The London Fire Brigade said it had worked with Camden Council to inspect the buildings on Chalcots Estate.

"It was farcical communication", 21-year-old Daniel Tackaberry told Reuters outside a nearby sports center where the local council had laid out air beds.

"Whilst we are clear that our cladding design and insulation significantly differs to that at Grenfell Tower, the external cladding panels did not satisfy our independent laboratory testing or the high standards we set for contractors", Gould said in a statement Thursday, adding that the council had chose to "immediately begin preparing to remove these external cladding panels". Urgent testing is being conducted on external siding panels on apartment blocks following the deadly June 14 blaze that engulfed Grenfell Tower, killing at least 79 people.

Residents of a block of flats in east London have been evacuated from the building where the fire broke out. Prime Minister Theresa May also said the government won't penalize any fire survivors who were in the country illegally.

He stressed that buildings which are found to have unsafe cladding may not necessarily have to be evacuated.

However, UK media reported dozens of people at the affected Chalcots Estate were refusing to leave their homes.

So far, Camden Council has been the only local authority known to have asked residents to leave as a precaution. Four tower blocks were evacuated following worries about the blocks' external cladding and gas pipe insulation.

Residents forced out of their homes described "chaos" and confusion as people left their apartments. Carl McDowell, 31, said he took one look at the inflatable beds offered on the floor of the leisure centre and went back to his own apartment.

The government said Saturday that the cladding samples that failed fire safety tests came from 27 apartment towers in cities including London, Manchester, Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Nine patients remain in hospital, of which three are in a critical condition. Combustible cladding used to insulate that tower and improve its appearance has been blamed for the rapid spread of the blaze.

The revised number was lower than the 800 estimated Friday night.

"We're encouraging all residents to stay with friends and family if they can, otherwise we'll provide accommodation", the council said.

Hundreds of residents were evacuated from public housing towers in London because officials were unable to guarantee their safety in the wake of the Grenfell Tower blaze.

In the days that followed, Adele then showed her support once again and paid an impromptu visit to a Chelsea fire house to see the firefighters who headed into the building and saved many lives.

Brent Council leader Muhammed Butt told Sky News the high-rise block in his area that failed the Government's combustibility test has been checked by the fire service and evacuation was not deemed necessary.

"I know some residents are angry and upset, but I want to be very clear that Camden Council acted to protect them", Gould said in a statement.
