Reports say Mueller probe now examining possible obstruction

The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russian election meddling and any ties between Russia and the Trump campaign is reviewing whether President Trump tried to obstruct justice, according to a report published Wednesday night in The Washington Post that cited unnamed officials.

Comey told Congress last week that before being sacked, Trump pressured him to drop an investigation into his former national security advisor, Mike Flynn, who was forced to quit for lying about his links to Moscow. Trump wrote on Twitter, in a pair of messages that ended with a reference to his campaign slogan "Make America Great Again".

On Wednesday, the Washington Post reported that the investigation has reached a turning point and will no longer just focus on possible collusion between Trump campaign aides and the Kremlin, but it will also investigate any possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said. He has already been subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee.

In response to the statement, former US Attorney Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired in March, tweeted early Friday morning that "Americans should also exercise caution before accepting as true lies about firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director & defamation of a war hero special counsel", references to criticisms Trump has levied against Mueller and James Comey.

The move ordered Thursday by the transition's general counsel cast a wide net on documents tied to the Russian Federation investigation as well as inquiries into the activities of Trump associates. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in his tweet.

Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she was "increasingly concerned" that Trump will fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

The transition official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss post-election decisions publicly. Do you think Trump will survive his first term?

Trump spent Friday morning touting his economic policies and criticizing the investigation.

Gingrich, the former House speaker whose wife is seeking Senate approval to become the US ambassador to the Vatican, continued to defend Trump Thursday morning.

Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the vice chairman, told CNN: "The criminal piece of the investigation will be handled by the special counsel, but if we find facts we can turn this over to the special counsel" and "report them" to Mueller's office.

"The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people!"

The president tweeted Friday, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof".

He followed that up 12 minutes later with a second tweet: "Crooked H destroyed phones w/ hammer, "bleached" emails, & had husband meet w/AG days before she was cleared- & they talk about obstruction?"

Trump did not directly address the allegations he obstructed justice - a potentially impeachable offense - neither did he deny he has entered the miniscule ranks of sitting presidents who have become the subject of a criminal investigation.
