Angry Trump decries being target of Russian Federation probe

Former FBI director James Comey told Congress last week that Trump pressured him to drop an investigation into his former national security advisor Mike Flynn who was forced to quit for lying about his links to Moscow

It came on the heels of a series of highly publicized Senate Intelligence Committee hearings involving fired FBI Director James Comey and top Trump administration and national security officials.

His comments follow revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey.

"Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump's life and his associates lives", Gingrich wrote on Twitter, adding "very unsafe".

President Donald Trump groused Thursday that no one is investigating Democrats' "dealings with Russia" while there are multiple investigations into what he phrased as his "non-dealings" with Moscow.

Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that Mr Trump had pressurised him to drop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. But then Rosenstein made the surprise move to appoint Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the Russian Federation investigation, a development that people close to Sessions and Trump believe has worsened matters for everyone involved.

CBS News has learned that Daniel Coats, the Director of National Intelligence, has agreed to be interviewed by the Special Counsel's office about conversations he may have had with the president about the Russian Federation investigation. The intelligence committee is the lead congressional panel on the Russian Federation hacking scandal, including highly publicized hearings with fired FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "Witch Hunt", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Apparently, Trump believes (or knows?) the report to be correct. Trump said in a follow-up message.

A clear majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump has tried to interfere with the investigation into whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election and possible Trump campaign collusion, a new poll shows.

The tweet represented a remarkable show of frustration by a serving President, who is making no secret of his emotions as an investigation that started out as an effort to understand Russian meddling in the election appears to be moving ever closer towards his inner circle and narrowing in on his own conduct.

The Post report cited anonymous sources who were briefed on requests made by investigators.

Tensions are building inside the Justice Department as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein contemplates whether he will become a witness in the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. elections.

Mr Trump's tweet sparked the derision of social media users.

Mueller is also investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, the Post reported Wednesday.

Mueller's friendship with Comey and Mueller's selection of several investigators who have made campaign donations to Democrats are among the issues Gingrich is raising as problematic.

Trump on Thursday tweeted that the investigation was "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Marc Kasowitz, Trump's personal lawyer, said Comey's testimony vindicated that Trump wasn't under investigation by the FBI.

Details from some memos were made public in news media accounts in the days after he was sacked, and Comey himself detailed his conversations with Trump at a Senate hearing last week. Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit - including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich - have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.

Mr Comey testified under oath that Mr Trump had told him during a private meeting: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".
