Spicer Evades Questions On When Trump Will Address Elusive Comey 'Tapes'

If there are tapes can the White House be forced to turn them over

The US Secret Service has said it doesn't have any recordings or transcripts of any tapes recorded within President Donald Trump's White House, a disclosure that failed to rule out whether any tapes exist of Trump's conversations with ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

That doesn't mean, however, that the recordings don't exist.

The Secret Service said it doesn't have and recordings or transcripts made from the White House since Trump took over, but also doesn't rule out that other recordings exit.

'James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!' the president tweeted on May 12. According to journalist Timothy O'Brien, Trump repeatedly told him in the 2000s that he was recording their conversations.

On Monday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer, asked again if there were recordings, would not confirm it.

The Journal's request sought recordings or transcripts of any recordings made after January 20 at the White House.

Mr. Comey became the subject of discussion in Washington over his testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee last week over Russian interference during the 2016 election.

"You'll be very disappointed in the answer", Mr. Trump said.

One reporter asked Spicer if audio recordings of the conversations actually existed.

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes", Comey said.

In questions on Friday, Trump refused to answer then said he would do so shortly.

'I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future, ' the president said.

'It appears, from a review of Secret Service's main indices, that there are no records pertaining to your request that are referenced in these indices, ' it continued.

Spicer said that he would have an announcement on the matter when he was ready.
