WASHINGTON Senate Republicans and Democrats have reached agreement on a new package of sanctions on Russian Federation amid investigations into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
The Senate Foreign Relations and Banking Committee announced a deal that had the support of the committee's top Democrats and Republicans that's expected to attract wide bipartisan support. He also said that new sanctions would be enshrined in a law limiting President Donald Trump's ability to lift them. And it imposes new sanctions in a number of categories, including those "conducting malicious cyber activity on behalf of the Russian government" and "supplying weapons to the Assad regime".
The deal also tightens existing sanctions against Russia, including ones former President Barack Obama imposed against Russian diplomats living in the U.S.

Us senators have made a decision to tighten sanctions against Russian Federation.
Both proposals could be voted this week, a significant shift from last month, when the Republican leaders seemed reluctant to move forward on sanctions against Moscow.
With the Trump team now under scrutiny for contacts with the Russians during the campaign, many lawmakers are anxious that the White House is looking to ease up on that pressure.
In any event, Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) took to the floor to praise the deal. The deal was also worked out with Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee Chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ranking Member Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Foreign Relations Ranking Member Ben Cardin (D-Maryland).
And Reuters reported in May that US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner had several previously undisclosed meetings with the same US envoy, and with a representative of a Russian bank.
President Trump had said in January he would be open to lifting sanctions on Moscow if they assisted the United States fight extremism and Terrorism.
The measure, which will be attached to a bill to stiffen Iran sanctions that is under consideration, incorporates proposals to codify existing Russian Federation sanctions, introduce punitive measures against Moscow in light of Russia's aggressive activities in Ukraine, introduce measures addressing Syria and the realm of cyberhacking, and give Congress the power to review efforts by the administration to scale back sanctions against Russian Federation before they can go through. "There was serious consideration by the White House to unilaterally rescind the sanctions", said Dan Fried, a veteran State Department official who served as chief US coordinator for sanctions policy until he retired in late February.
