Iran sends planes of food to Qatar amid concerns of shortages

Qatar says Gulf citizens can stay despite crisis

As diplomatic crisis hits the Gulf, creating fears that it might affect Bangladesh's labour market in the region, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali yesterday said they were "aware" of the Qatar-Saudi Arabia situation.

On Friday, Amnesty International slammed Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE for ripping apart mixed families amid the crisis. "The fact that Saudi Arabia closes the border and imposes economic embargo doesn't bother us, since we can source all kinds of food and items".

"Earlier this week, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Qatar must end its support for Hamas and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to restore ties with Persian Gulf Arab countries".

In addition to Saudi Arabia's aggressive approach, Egypt's Foreign Ministry accused Qatar of taking an "antagonist approach" towards Cairo and said "all attempts to stop it from supporting terrorist groups failed".

In Moscow, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said his country will undertake every effort to help ease the tensions.

"The citizens of these states have absolute freedom to stay in the territories of the state of Qatar in adherence with the laws and applicable regulations in the country in the context of working treaties established with them and with the agreement of their countries and based on entry visas that are available to them" it continued.

The results cover the period from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017, well before Saudi Arabia and several of its allies cut ties with Qatar and severed air links with Doha about a week ago.

Iran Air spokesman Shahrokh Noushabadi told The Associated Press that a sixth planeload of vegetables will head to Qatar on Sunday.

Iranian media meanwhile reported that three traditional dhow boats carrying some 350 tons of fruit are to leave for Qatar from the small Iranian port of Dayyer.

While U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has urged Gulf nations not to escalate the crisis, President Donald Trump repeatedly has criticized Qatar over its alleged support of militants.

Washington has sent mixed signals on the crisis, despite Qatar's position as a key ally and host to the region's largest United States airbase.

A previous mediation effort by Kuwait in which the Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah shuttled between Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha, failed to achieve an immediate breakthrough.

Saudi Arabia's state-run news agency carried an official statement welcoming Trump's remarks, adding that cutting off terrorism funding "required decisive and swift action. regardless of its financier".
