FM Zarif in Kazakhstan for SCO Summit

Indian media claims that Narendra Modi shook hand with Nawaz Sharif in Astana on Thursday

It is impossible to reach a solution till all make concerted efforts, on radicalization, terrorist recruitment, training and financing issues, PM Modi said at the meet where leaders of all member countries were present including Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif. "Some Indian media should free itself from outdated views, and embrace new patterns of regional cooperation", it said.

Prior to his departure for Astana, PM Modi had tweeted, "At this meeting, on completion of the process, India will become a full Member of the SCO upon which SCO will represent over 40% of humanity and almost 20% of global GDP".

India had been an observer country at the SCO - a Eurasian political, economic and military bloc - since 2005 and had applied for a full membership in 2014 and the SCO foreign ministers gave a positive recommendation when they met in June 2015.

Expressing gratitude to the member countries for supporting Pakistan's permanent membership to the organization, he said it is a historic day for Pakistan to become the full member of the organization.

The Astana SCO summit will see leaders of the six member countries taking part and discussing several issues including peace and security in the region. India and Pakistan are one step away from becoming SCO members.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Kazakhstan's Astana.

However, the Prime Minister, speaking in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, among others, asserted that sovereignty and territorial integrity should be the key factors in such a cooperation.

In his address, Modi said SCO could also devote attention towards climate change.

While India's statement on connectivity targeted the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor being a part of the One-Belt One Road, the comments on terrorism were aimed at Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism.

"We spoke about India-China relations and how to further improve ties", Modi tweeted after his meeting with Xi.

China and India should also boost trade and investment cooperation and work together for earlier harvest from large- scale cooperation projects in such areas as production capability, industrial parks and railway construction, Xi said.

Xi said China attaches great importance to its ties with India.
