Afghan president calls on Taliban to join peace talks

Aftermath of bloody Afghan blasts stokes government tensions

The forum concluded that instead of blaming Pakistan, Afghanistan needs to look inward and identify the real issues. He urged the worldwide community to "make good on its promise" to end state-sponsored terrorism.

He said Taliban-sponsored terrorism is creating a platform that brings terrorists from all over the region to Afghanistan.

According to sources, the rocket landed in the volleyball court of the compound.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far in the incident.

The bomb was planted in a rickshaw. The Taliban denied responsibility.

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani (C) attends a peace and security cooperation conference in Kabul, Afghanistan June 6, 2017. "This is the last chance for Taliban to become part of the national mainstream", he said, and assured the Taliban that he would provide them space to open up an office for conducting peace negotiations.

Officials see the Kabul Process as an attempt by the Afghan government to replace other processes on reconciliation like the Moscow meetings held since December 2016, and the American-backed Murree Process in Pakistan in 2015.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday hosted the Kabul Process - a multinational peace conference, in which he explained that the goal of the conference was to defeat terrorism and ensure peace.

There are already 8,000 USA troops in Afghanistan.

The statement came hours after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani accused Pakistan of waging an "undeclared war of aggression" against his country.

Tuesday's Kabul peace conference also comes amid an acute foreign relations crisis, as the majority of Afghans accuse Pakistan of continuing to host the Taliban leadership and its most murderous wing, the Haqqani group. Twenty people died in that attack.

The success or failure of today's peace conference could prove a bellwether for the Trump administration's yet-to-be-announced Afghanistan strategy.

"Roshan can now confirm we have lost 12 Roshan staff members and 19 employees from our longstanding partner companies as a result of Wednesday's tragic explosion", a statement by the telecom firm said. Since playing blame game without finding a solution to the problem is increasing acrimony between the two countries. Not that there is any nexus, but the attack serves a reminder that the macabre in Afghanistan has only piled up over the years and that Pakistan, according to the Afghan government and intelligence agencies, is contributing to making the pile get even bigger. "We want to be able to trust Pakistan and we want the chance for friendly, cooperative relationships that will reduce poverty and promote growth on both sides of the frontier", he warned. Several demonstrators were killed Friday in clashes with security forces.

"It is really hard to be optimistic for peace with the Taliban and other armed oppositions when Kabul has witnessed such a tragedy", said Sayed Hamed Daqiq, a former government official who is now a political analyst.

The economic crisis - already acute with tens of thousands of Afghans fleeing to Europe, villages devastated by the war with the Taliban and U.S. aid now in doubt - has suddenly got much worse.
