A MALAYSIAN Airlines plane has been forced to turn back to Melbourne after passenger tried to enter the cockpit and reportedly screamed he had a bomb.

The flight, bound for Kuala Lumpur, was forced to turn back "due to a disruptive passenger", a statement from the airline said.

"The plane landed safely at the airport and passengers are now exiting the plane and speaking to investigators".

MH128 landed safely at Melbourne Airport at 11.41pm (1.41am Thursday NZT), the company said.

According to latest reports, all passengers onboard MH 128 are safe.

He said the man then ran to the back of the plane, where he was overpowered by other passengers.

A picture tweeted by one of the passengers appears to show the man face-down on the floor after being handcuffed. The plane returned to the airport and authorities quickly detained the passenger.

The captain turned the plane around after being alerted to a "passenger attempting to enter the cockpit".

"MH128 safely landed in Melbourne Airport at 11.41pm".

The incident came just months after Canberra called off the search for missing flight MH370 carrying 239 passengers and crew, after a vast underwater hunt off Australia s west coast failed to find the plane.

Mr Kaprawi said: "It is not a hijack". The flight was around seven hours away from Kuala Lumpur.

According to The Independent, Wednesday's incident is under investigation.

The passenger was later arrested by Australian authorities in Melboure.

The Melbourne Airport is under a lock-down now with all flights scheduled to land there being diverted. The airline wishes to apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Passengers were screened upon disembarkation and put up at hotels, and will be offered seats on alternative flights.
