Manchester attack probe: 16 people in detention

Man arrested in Old Trafford as witnesses hear 'explosions' at police raid

LONDON (AP) - British police have made an arrest on the south coast of England in the widening inquiry into the deadly Manchester concert bombing.

The 23-year-old man was arrested in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, "on suspicion on offences contrary to the terrorism act", Greater Manchester Police said on Twitter.

Fourteen men were being held in custody in connection with the Manchester Arena attack.

Britain's MI5 intelligence service is to hold an inquiry into its handling of information surrounding the Manchester bomber, Salman Abedi, after it emerged that it had been alerted to his extremist views by members of the public at least three times ahead of the attack which killed 22 and wounded dozens outside of an Ariana Grande concert on May 22, 2017, according to British media reports.

Earlier on Saturday, police evacuated an area of Moss Side in Manchester, in a search linked to Monday's Manchester Arena bombing which killed 22 people and left scores injured.

Investigators say they have a 1,000-strong team working on the probe and have significant details on Abedi's associates and movements, his finances, and how the explosive was built.

When asked how many potential militants the government was anxious about, Rudd said the security services were looking at 500 different potential plots, involving 3,000 people as a "top list", with a further 20,000 beneath that.

The home secretary would not comment specifically on what the security service knew about Abedi, but insisted it was right for MI5 to review its processes because "the threat is always changing".

Police raided more homes on Monday as the relentless search for the network behind the suicide bombing continued a week on from the attack.

A spokesman said that the brother was aware of Abedi's attack plan and that both men belonged to the Islamic State group, which claimed responsibility for the attack. "We shouldn't rush to make any conclusions at this stage".

Police have released surveillance-camera images of Abedi on the night of the attack that show him dressed in sneakers, jeans, a dark jacket and a baseball cap.

Counter-terror police hunting the terror network behind the Manchester suicide attack have arrested a man in one of the country's most expensive seaside towns.

It drew particular revulsion because of the targeting of children - the youngest victim was just eight years old, and nine of the others were teenagers.

"I wish I could say that Georgina is one of the last to die in this way, but unless our government opens its eyes we know we are only another in a long line of parents on a list that continues to grow", the family said in a statement released through Greater Manchester Police.
